Le trip to Le Menez Hom

Then, more tourism!  :D
This time, in Locronan, an entire village dedicated to handcraft artisans
We arrived under the showers, but the weather got better later. If I remember, this is pretty much the only rain we had  :?:

And with St Ronan everywhere!

Oh, and with a nice shop... dedicated to beers!!... BEERS!!

Oh, and we ended up in a wedding too...

So of course...  :D

And guess what... They even have a linen museum! (not too sure how we ended up in there still!   )

And after that, the usual food / wine / laughs!  :D Ready for the last day of the event.

Ok more pics.

I can't recall the name of this village, but it was lovely to walk round.

Ronan's beer cellar!!

And they lived happy ever after!!

Last night at the campsite, we all attended the pilots and family dinner evening.

Roisin decided Fred's hair needed a little work!

We travelled back to Ronans house on the Sunday, however, we stopped off in Saint Malo, just can't find the pics yet, we post later! :?:

On the Monday, Ronan took over the driving, so we visited the D-Day locations and museums along the coast.

First stop was the Pegasus bridge museum at Caen. This is the bridge that the british 6th airborn made a glider assault to take and hold the bridge.

We next visited the Gun battery at Merville which was the target for the british 9th airborn on the night before D-day.

.

more to follow!

Next stop on our tour, was the D-day beachs,Sword, juno, Gold, Omaha and Point Du Hoc. The only place we did not visit was Utah.

Sword beach head with the an old bunker still standing.

Left view.

Gold and Juno beach landing areas.

Omaha beach head, you can still see the shell craters around the German strong points. Over 2900 men lost their lives on this stretch of sand on the first day of D-day!

looking down the beach at Omaha.

Looking up the beach towards point du huc.

Next stop on our tour and the last for the day was the cliff gun battery and bunkers on the Point Du Hoc. This strong hold was attacked by the US Rangers, which climbed the cliffs under fire on D-day only to find that the big guns had been removed only a few weeks before the raid, and found telegraph poles in the gun bunkers, they too lost alot of man in taking the gun battery.

Roisin standing in one of the shell craters

A view of the cliffs the Rangers had to over come on D-day.

Isabelle in the main command bunker

Brave men, all of them....

Ok, my turn  :P  :D

Last day of flying, still with big winds conditions, but still coming from the left.

A MU28... Same as Keith's one (but finished... :-#   )

Oh, an orange glider again  :P

Ronan and Alain

That L213 made a few people drooling!

Ronan had to explain in detail the exact location of things

Prep work of Robby's Gilles Gohier(rip) build 1/3 scale Duo Discus (but extended wingspan to 6.9m). Emotional moment for Robby.

This Kobuz did VTPR aeros all day at the slope! Very nice machine (if you like the Kobuz shape though)

Oh, and there is a new aerobat in town...  :)

The trophy table

Michel and Alain, chairman of the Morlaix and Brest MAC with a final words for all of us. This put an end to the 20th anniversary of the Menez Hom meeting

We all went back to the campsite, where a dinner was organised for all pilots and family

No shame!

That night of course, ended up late with some more beverages back at the mobile home. I think we even got lost at some point, but not sure!
Next morning, plan was to head back to Ronan's house early, with a stop at St Malo...

As John said, on the way back, we stopped at St Malo  :D

We also found a shop where a guy was doing scale ships / planes.. Amazing quality (and not that expensive considering the work!)

That one was made of aluminium, complete with seats etc etc

Back at Ronan's house, we then visited the D-Day sites and Pegasus Bridge Museum

Interesting tool to manage the CG of an Horsa glider...

And some more visiting :)

The memorial at the Pointe du Hoc site...

John (happy and proud) managed to climb a bump

Omaha Beach.. With some tourists that really need to get a room!!  :P  At the back, the US cemetery

Then, it was time to deliver one of my plane to a local Museum dedicated to transport. Thanks Luc for the laugh, the tour and the drinks!    :D

And John got tired at some stage...

Must be because of the attempt to play the "Clairon" !

I have a video of that

Then, visit to see BenBen... Proud to show us his new bicycle...

Roisin had to have a go!  :D

We saw the Comet.. Stunning model!
Plan is to make it lighter now, time to design and cut some ribs!  :D

For the ones who look for a model trailer...

Thanks Benoit for the visit and the coffee!  :D

We then headed for more food!

And after a good night, time to head back to Cherbourg!
Mandatory visit of the Submarines museum at the "Cité de la Mer".

And back in the ferry...

For more drinks!

Goodbye France!
Once again, many thanks to Ronan and Isa
Lots of laughs, so many good moments! these photos are only scratching the surface! You need to be there, but that was one trip not to miss!
We got an idea for a trip next year by the way... If more of you wants to join us  :D  :D

Well, a whole series of reports, thank you gentlemen for taking the time and effort to post them.
With so many different aspects to your trip, it must have been difficult to know how to fit it all into the time you were there.

What a mass of model gliders. Endless! May be I could get away with my Alpina? :?:  But with my standard of repairs that I’ve done to it I’d be ashamed to show it!
Who owns the Mu28 Fred?

Incidentally JP, I have to say you looked remarkably sober during your stay in France. Could it be that you’re ‘turning over a new leaf?’ :)

The area is very rich in military history isn’t it. Great picture of’ “The SNAFU Special” (Only Americans could get away with naming a plane that  ) One day I’m gonna get a flight in a Dakota…….one day.

Loved the village with grey stone walled houses with cobbled streets, really pretty. :D  Although not as pretty as Roisin & Isabelle of course! And as for Ronan trying to look pious, …..Doesn’t really work, does it.
And  a shop, in France, that sells only beer ???!!!  I don’t believe it. It can’t be right. (I think that was a bit of trick photography.)

I’m sure you’ve showed us the little museum with the motorbikes, toy cars and other memorabilia before, haven’t you Fred? Or was that a different one may be?

So, Benoit rides a Moto Guzzi er? 8)  Obviously a man of culture and breeding, he & I would get on famously together. BTW does the ‘ Guzzi pull his model trailer, it would certainly have the power to do so. Or does he rely on the car for that task?

Finally a big thank you to Ronan & Isabelle for accommodating  Fred for a whole week. :P   We, in Ireland, are very grateful to you!

    Thanks Keith! (and sorry for the late answer, work managed to get in the way!  :!:  :!: )

I can't remember who had the Mu28    That was a setup flight. Flew very well and a nice sight in flight. Looks like a big Toon!  :D

Yeah, you are right, I already posted photos of the transport museum last year. Looks much better this year, as the exibits were moved around, muche clearer now if you see what I mean  :D

And the trailer is towed by the car  :D  Neat trailer I have to say! Benoit said that when towing it, he can't feel it, or see it, great for long drives.
Very tempting I have to say!

Hi all,

At long last, here is my video!
Quick job as I don't really have time these days to do that.
35 minutes long, kind of boring if you were not there

Enjoy!  :D

I quite enjoyed that Fred. Thanks for the compilation. I liked the pause, and then spot landing by the Italian retro model. (I have no idea what model it actually was I’m afraid.)
And there was a little aerobatic flying as well, just to impress! Thanks for sharing the event with us all.
Well done that man
