Ridge Runt
« on: November 03, 2008, 15:44:42 PM »
Hi all,

I've been looking at one of these models.
They almost gone and even the clones like RipMax Coyote are also very hard to get.
Thing is i collected some impressions and everyone seems to agree that it's a pretty fine model. Any comments on this?

Also i noticed in some places that it doesn't have rudder, could it be possible to put rudder without compromising the plane?

Thanks.
..Nando

Hi Fernando,

I had a ridge runt a long time ago.
In my opinion (personnal one !   ) I don't think this is a great machine as pure slope soarer. Too small for my taste, and we can have much better these days !

By the way, what's the story with the glider I gave you ?  :D
Much better than the Ridge Runt by far !

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the opinion. The RRunt i had someone that would make me a short kit for it so that's why and yes it can be also be converted to motor powered so it gives a good all-terrain option to carry around.

The P4 i was working on it when i went back to Portugal so i stopped.
Now that i came back i started again, i have all the gear for it except the servos.
The ones is got were terrible... :( jitter alot and didn't even centered correctly. Not sure if it was some problem with the radio has i never had any problem like that, but i sent them back.
So now I'm waiting for some other ones  I'm going to futaba this time, i don't have stuff this big in stock the biggest i was used to deal was 9gr. :)

For the Phase 4, basic standard size servos are more than enough !  :D
Too big for the 9 grams.
What are the servos you had issues with ?  :?:

I got some SCR 48G from HobbyKing but looking now at the reviews some are not really nice and report the exact same problem i found.
But not all say the same i wonder if it's a Radio + Servo combination that causes that has i tried using a different model/brand of RX.

I should have stayed with HXT never had a problem with the brand despite been cheaper.

Hi all,
Sorry to disagree with you Fred, but I think the ridge runt is a superb  :D  model. Kevin Barry and I kitted 20 for a club project and 16 of them saw the air, one even saw the sea :o . The Runt with a rudder was known as the Super Ridge Runt and had a higher wing loading and 3 functions but the "coupe" version only had 2 channels but was good enough to fly from 4mph to 22 mph without ballast. Might have the bones of a kit left in the loft if you are interested in joining the elite team!!!

Hi Ralph,

That's why I said totally personnal opinion on that one !  O:)   :P
A good glider alright, but it did not left me a "must have/keep" souvenir at the time.

And one of Cork's Ridge Runt at the 2005 Glide in !

I think I've heard of an EPP version somewhere of the Ridge Runt  :?:  Can be fun !  :D

Great photo!

All comments are welcome. :)

Regading the EPP version, on the search i made, it seems that a "new" version included a foam wing.

I'm not sure.  :?:

Talking about the wing, i noticed on the plans that it's a flat bottom airfoil.
That shouldn't be much fun for inverted flight neither to get speed  right?
I wonder if changing the airfoil for something different than this would not make it more fun to fly.

Well, like this, the Ridge Runt is already a fast flyer ! (can fly really fast if I remember well  :?: )

Leave the profile as it is, it works !

And to be honest, on a built up wing, don't expect to be sure to have found the "top-notch profile of the death that kick ass" and believe it's going to perform like a fully molded wing !
