Alright, another PSS project that I just started.
I used the Hobbyking DC3 (1.6m ws) as a base.
A few changes to the kit to make it scale was done, like the canopy, now scale in shape!
Will also include the interior with 2 civilian pilots etc.
Plan is to cover the entire model with Aluminium for a "real" finish. Scheme will be the TWA, Swissair, Finnair or Delta airlines... Haven't decided yet! :-\
Anyway, here are a couple of photos of the start of the project. The aluminium finish does look the part from a distance, so happy with that... But a pain in the neck to put on! :'(

Nice work Fred.
-
Thank you all :)
It's actually not that good to be honest, but as long as it does look the part from 2 metres, I am happy with that :)
More photos later, with the start of the actual build! :)
-
A tiny bit of progress last night!
Spar is in. Next, servos and links.
Oh, and there is no plans or build instructions... Lots of pieces I don't have a clue where they go! So, looks like my DC3 will be lighter than the RTF one :)
-
Ok, time to finish those wings!
Servis put in and plugged. I put the ones for the flaps, but, I may not plug them in. Maybe after the first flight as I cannot see them being useful in that case. So we’ll see if that is a good decision!
-
THEn, the latest ne and painful task of covering that thing with aluminium tape!
I use the 3M one, lightish, and is actually real aluminium.
Painful to put in, and I did them by individual panels, cut to size. Worth the pain I think, as I am pleased with the results :)
Now, underside left to be done, and we can tackle the fuselage!
-
Looking good! I'll bet it'll look stunning on the Big L. ;)
-
Thanks :)
I do like my crashes to look as realistic as possible! 8)
-
Alright, shifted focus on the fuselage!
I wanted a more scale look, as the front fuselage looked odd to me. I really did not wanted to re-do the entire thing, and I was going to sadly, leave it as is... Until I found a company in the US that produced a more scale cockpit parts... With pilots etc.
Ordered straight away, and promptly received.. This is much, much better! (see photos).
Anyway, a bit of work done yesterday, with the cutting and fitting of all the parts, then gluing them inside the cockpit.
Everything is now ready to be painted :)
-
By the way! Picked the color scheme :)
-
I could not resist :)
Looks good so far. Also received my stickers from Callie Graphics, and that thing might turn out better than expected! :)
-
I could not resist again :(
Self satisfaction full on :)
Now, fuselage covering, panel by panel :'(

One small bit at a time!
2hrs for the rudder :'(
Next, fuselage :-X
-
Last bits for tonight! :)
You can barely see the interior, but somehow, I feel better! :D
-
Coming together nicely Fred looks really good.
What are you using to create the rivet lines?
Joe
-
Thanks Joe :)
I have a "riveter" (wheel), but in this case, I simply used an old ball point pen (medium size). Lightly pressed in the aluminium.
It does look the part a metre away, but far from perfect up close. The wheel was punching through the aluminium :(
-
God Fred you must have grate patience, Sounds far more boring than having to write 500 lines as a punishment when back in school.
"Joe must pay more attention in class" or perhaps worse. Might be easier to write 50 lines saying I must not push to hard on the wheel and then use it gently.
Keep up the good work it does make a huge difference to the model.
-
Well, it is taking a while alright! :)
It is a punishment alright (I wish this was the school punishment! That would have been a cool teacher :) "500 rivets on my plane because you are noisy, that will calm you down!" >:D
In this case anyway, you can't really do it without those rivets :'( It does look cool :) Fuselage sheeting started, maybe some photos tonight, but we are getting close to the finish line!
Just in time for the next one :-[
-
Fuselage!!
Long and painful, so all is going according to plan :)
-
Today, fuselage!
I made an executive decision, and decided to glue the front canopy, and leave the battery inaccessible, but I could not bear the look of the seam on the fuselage!
CofG done before gluing it. I had to put a 5cells 4200 and a bit of lead to achieve a CG at 90mm from le.
Manual says 65mm, but that one looks more sensible!
Anyway, 2 hours of “fun” later, had my fuselage done.
Really pleased with the front part, I really thought I was going to struggle, but no, just time consuming!
-
Billions of rivets later, and stickers, I totally deserve that beer!!
Love that thing!! :)
Mind you, not finished yet, but getting real close now :)
A good day!
-
Looking good! Can you do one for me, too?
-
Nice one Fred!
That will look very good in the air.
-
Beautiful, what a great job 8)

Wahou tu vois quand tu veux 8)

looks good fred

-
Nice work Fred.
-
stunning Fred. Now it just needs to fly :)
-
Thank you all!
No merits, this was a foam kit, so not much building involved on that one!
First flights here if the conditions are spot on. Otherwise, I'll wait for Macon and the competition... Fingers crossed! :)
-
More outdoor photos while it’s still summer!!
-
Well, that thing is now mine 8) 8)
-
Soooo, the DC3 flew, and rather very well to my surprise I have to say!
That thing looks really really good in the air with its civilian scheme!
And the static judges liked it! :)
Anyway, first flight done and dusted in windy/bumpy conditions, and it all happened without any issues with a perfect landing 8)
And I took second place at the VDP International :)
