Title: Fred got competition!
Post by: selleri on October 29, 2013, 15:40:53 PM
...or how I stopped hating Singapore Post and learned to love the hot wire.

Well not really but my wing (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=34072&aff=104285) seems to have taken up residency in the far east offices of Singapore Post so taking a page from the Chinese playbook we decided to use the kit my mate ordered at the same time as a template.

First up, we need a bow.

And something to heat it up.

After having searched all over the place(local foam companies not willing to sell/donate wire even after buying the foam) the internet told tales of SS wire being suitable. As I use that to safety wire (http://alshobbies.com/shop/lookupstock.php?pc=40128) fuel tubes problem was solved and wouldn't you know it, it works!

The templates supplied by the Chinese.

Marking the outlines.

Straight lines are a plus.

Voila, few cores ready for the next step.

Then what? Better lay some lines...

And on we go.

Root template in its place.

Let the cutting begin.

Cut, cut, cut.

Voila, one wing half ready, heat and repeat as much as needed.

Sand lightly over the wings.

Glue them together.

Next up some covering.

This is turning bloody!

Or what... isn't it Halloween tonight?

Nahhh, just some wood glue, thinned with food colour and water.

Then the wetted paper is layed over the wing and more glue applied over it.

One down, one to go.

One with glue applied over the paper and one without.

Then we let them dry overnight before doing the other side.

Next up, wingtips.

Wingtips cut.

Voila, two wings ready for the next round, amazing how much strength the paper adds.

Bit warped but we'll be fine after applying paper to the other side.

Alien blood... or more food colour.

Greeeeeeeeen.

This time we used old credit cards to squeese most of the water out of the paper. I think we'll do that in the future.

Add some weight and wait for tomorrow.

Tomorrow has arrived, time for some colour!

Arf, that's those guys from IcelandModels!

Very nice work      Cuts are looking very clean

For cutting wire, I use the Graupner one (can't remember the size.. 0.8 maybe..) and never had an issue. Cheap and easy to find  :D

Next wings, with fibre skin?    :D

(On a side note, as you can see, the links are still light blue... Working on it, but the changes are not taken by the forum for some reasons  :!:  :!: )

That is a genius method of covering those wings, nice job and saves a load of hassle with trying to paint foamie. Nice job.

Cheers, I'd like to do a model needing fibre wings at some point. :-)

Hmmm, maybe the default colour is added to the links after you try changing them. Maybe a seperate css file...

Mark for the servos.

Then we remove the foam.

And here we see all the radio system installed.

Pushrods and control horns installed.

I needed to add about 120 gr.(4oz) to the nose to get the CG in front of the after limit.
Lightning holes in the winglets and even the elevon might be a good idea.

Tada, here it is, ready for the maiden! Today had some nice slope lift but 40-50 m/s is a tad too much...  ;-)

After the first test glides I'm seriously thinking the photoshopped picture in the previous post needs happening!

For some reason our usual camera man thinks that GoPro is suitable for long range filming...

Needed a bit of up trim as can be seen from the first throw, the second throw was better(no wind) but not a firm enough launch.
After that the wind picked up so a decent glide was had alas no filming.

Now to get it onto a slope!  :D
