Another day at the office?
« on: April 08, 2009, 16:38:57 PM »
Could not resist it. Sunshine, west wind, and a new model to fly. :D
(Actually it wasn't a 'new' model, but one that Fred had given me a few weeks ago. But what does that matter? :P )
So armed with a little stills camera I tried flying and photo'ing at the same time. (Not good for the heart rate  .......trust me on this one!)

'Turning Left!'

'Coming in for a low pass'

She blew back from the ridge and I nearly lost her to the dreaded Trees!!!

No, she didn't crash,...........just very nearly

Don't think I'll do any more of this one handed flying. I have enough pairs of brown trousers now!

Well I bought a new one with tripple the capacity (1800mAh) but I have'nt received it yet. But I recharged the old battery and it's fine now  :?: . Must check my computer charger  :?: . Never had problems with the charger before. But when I do get my new battery I think I'll use that.

Hmmm,...............You've probably already thought of this, but I wonder if you haven't got a slight corrosion problem on the battery terminals causing an intermittent high resistance contact. :?
It seems odd that the battery goes down to Tx cut off voltage when in use one moment, but not the next :?:

I agree,......best you use the new battery Alan, don't want to loose another model!

Normaly when I get the low battery warning I usualy have about five minuets to get the model down. During that period It usualy beeps every 4 or 5 seconds. Its only the last 5 to 10 seconds that it beeps continuosly which is what it did straight away after 10 minuets that day. I did not have a chance. The battery must not have been charged at all. Ah well you live and learn. I'll just have to make sure its fully charged somehow next time.

Very good Keith !
The last shot looks like it is going to hurt !

Alan, why don't you go Lipo ? Did it on my MC18, best move ever ! And going to convert all my radios!
Haven't charged it for almost a year now (10 months I think... And the last charge was just a balance for the cells...), still reading 12.1 volts ! I lose around 0.1 volts /month, using it or not. And lighter radio too...)

Well Joe :?:

She seems a very stable bird. Great "presents" in the sky, although not extremely acrobatic. (Winds yesterday - 30Kph gusting to 50)

Fred suggested moving the CoG back. I moved it back 5mm, doesn't seem to have made much difference. Maybe I need to take it back more.
At the moment she takes a fortnight to roll, and wont fly inverted without loosing loads of height.

Having said all that,.................I spent more time flying her yesterday than any othe model, she is a nice plane to fly :D

Well that last bit sounds very positive. I would like to see you fly this in light to medium lift Keith as I'm sure it will be perfect for that. The S-15 is great for strong wings and maybe this is the model to get you into some more civilized gliding!
I think if you were to fly this model in thermal or lighter lift you might enjoy it.
Think of those nice long balmy summer evenings on the slope with a bottle of chardonnay or flagon of cider hehe

So I took your advise Joe............

Went slopeing this morning in light conditions...........

But you forgot to tell me what I should do when, 400mtrs out from the slope with not much height, the wind drops.

I tried to run for home, but the model went out of sight (Below the ridge)..........

When I found it, it looked like this.............

So I blame you!( )

Fortunately the wings are okay and the fuse is made of wood. So with lots of CA glue and some epoxy this is what she looks like this afternoon.

The fuse snapped at a former, so no chance of putting a splint on the inside. I'm thinking of wrapping the outside of the break in a glass "bandage"

Anyone got a better idea?
