Intro plus Quark question
« on: December 31, 2012, 18:33:51 PM »
Greetings folks,  I live in Cape Town and enjoy flying slope and electrics.  I am interested in building a Quark and have 2 questions.

Firstly, is it OK to use balsa rather than ply for the ribs?  If so, would 2mm be OK?

Secondly, I suspect that I might not be able to source 1m lengths of carbon tube for the spars.  Has anyone built a 3/4 size Quark?

I hope you all have a good New Year's eve; it is blowing a gale here in CT.

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum :)
My apologies for the very late reply, just out of bed after a few days of intense Flu!  :!:

A 3/4 size Quark sound like a good idea  :D  That would be slightly bigger than the mini Quark (see the thread a bit further down).
For the ribs, yes, doing them in balsa will work just fine (2mm OK).
Also, seeing the price of carbone tube these days, you can also do the spars in hardwood.
With the 2m size, I would see 10x5mm a good size and should be available in any model shops in 1m lenght. This is actually a modification to the plan and kits I think I will do  :?:
Let me know if you need any help with the plan / modifications

Howzit Mike
I'm an ex Cape Town slopehead, from a while back.
If you are still interested in using longish carbon tube you could try
the kite manufacturers,I used to get mine from a crowd
in Muizenberg, but I don't have their details now.
Hope it helps

cheers

Very good point Peter!
Kite guys should have all the size and lengths you need at good price :)
Be careful, the spars are also used as wing joiner tubes, si you will need rods that fits in these tubes too :)
